Kona Tiki puts an engineered Polynesian tattoo print with a gradient finish on HIC's 8-way Octo Stretch fabric. You get a gusseted crotch, a 21-inch outseam, UPF 50+ sun protection, a quick-dry coating and a side zipper pocket.

The gusset
Extra fabric right where most board shorts bind.
On most board shorts, four seams meet at one point in the crotch. That point pulls tight every time you paddle, squat or pop up.
Kona Tiki has a separate band of fabric sewn across the crotch instead. The seams never meet in one point, so the shorts give with you. Of our HIC board shorts, only Kona Tiki and Kanaha are built this way. The photo shows the panel on our Kanaha; Kona Tiki is sewn the same way.
The stretch
Stretch that moves the way you do.
Most board shorts stretch four ways: side to side and up and down. HIC's 8-way Octo Stretch adds the diagonals, so the fabric gives when you pop up, paddle or dive for a ball instead of pulling at the seams.
The print
Drawn for the shorts, not cut from a roll.
The Polynesian tattoo art on Kona Tiki is an engineered print: it's laid out for the shorts' panels instead of repeating like fabric off a roll. Grey linework on black, with a gradient finish.
The build
Small details you'll notice every time you put them on.
- Gusseted crotch A separate panel of fabric sewn across the crotch, so the leg seams never meet in one point. Nothing binds when you paddle, squat or pop up.
- Side zipper pocket with a wax comb string inside.
- Tie-front closure with a spandex fly.
- Structured, non-stretch waistband that stays put.
- Embroidered HIC patch on the leg and a contrasting HIC logo on the waistband.
- No mesh lining.
- Triple-needle stitching on the seams.

Which size should I order?
Measure your waist where the shorts will sit, just below the belly button. Email jz@mauishirts.com with that number and we'll measure a pair from our shelf and tell you which size fits.
What's a gusseted crotch?
Most board shorts have four seams meeting at one point in the crotch, and that's where they pull and bind. Kona Tiki has a separate band of fabric sewn across the crotch instead, so the shorts give when you paddle, squat or pop up. Of our HIC board shorts, only Kona Tiki and Kanaha have it.
How long are they?
21-inch outseam on size 32, measured from the top of the waistband to the hem. That's the same length as our Kanaha and an inch longer than the 20-inch Ua Huka.
Is there a mesh liner?
No. Kona Tiki has no mesh lining; a spandex fly gives coverage instead.
What does UPF 50+ mean?
UPF rates how much UV light gets through fabric. UPF 50+ means no more than 1/50th (2%) of UV rays pass through, so the skin under your shorts stays covered on long days in the sun.
When will my order arrive?
Weekday orders placed by 1 PM HST ship the same day from Wailuku. Free Standard shipping (USPS) takes 5–7 business days after your order ships. USPS Priority (3–5 business days) and FedEx 2Day are available at checkout.
What if they don't fit?
Exchange them within 30 days of delivery with no restocking fee. They need to be unworn and unwashed with the tags on. If you'd rather have a refund, there's a 15% restocking fee. Email jz@mauishirts.com first and we'll walk you through it. Read the full policy.
